Day 2

Your journey begins at Christchurch Railway Station, where the iconic TranzAlpine awaits. Often regarded to be one of the world's great train journeys for the scenery through which it passes. The journey is 223 kilometres one-way, taking almost five hours. You will see epic vistas, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, traverse the majestic Canterbury Plains and Southern Alps, and see large tracts of native beech forest.

On arrival in Greymouth, luxury coaches await to transport you down the West Coast via Hokitika to your hotel in the ruggedly beautiful Franz Josef.

Tonight's stay Scenic Hotel Franz Josef
Day 3

Wake up to enjoy the option for a helicopter tour of the Franz Josef glacier. Leaving Franz Josef, we travel down the West Coast through the Haast Pass, journeying through large tracts of native rain forest and over the Southern Alps. This remote area has a ruggedly beautiful landscape of vast rainforests, gushing waterfalls and snow capped mountains. Continuing through Makarora on the border of Mount Aspiring World Heritage Park, we pass by the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea and Lake Dunstan.

The adventure playground of Queenstown then awaits! Cap off a special day as we take in The Remarkables Mountain Range and the view of Lake Wakatipu from the hotel.

Tonight's stay Mercure Queenstown Resort — with views over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables Mountain range
Day 4

Wake up to join a lake cruise on board the historic TSS Earnslaw, the 1912 Edwardian steamboat, which takes us across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak High Country Farm for a gourmet BBQ lunch.

Tonight's stay Mercure Queenstown Resort
Day 5

Departing Queenstown, we continue to the village of Kingston which is nestled on southernmost end of Lake Wakatipu. Here, the iconic Kingston Flyer Steam Train awaits to take you on a memorable return journey between Kingston & Fairlight.

Then, we enter the Fiordland National Park district, continuing to traverse the Southern Scenic Route, our journey calls in to visit the Takahe Bird Sanctuary. Takahe are the stars of the show and meeting these prehistoric-looking characters is a 'must do' for Fiordland visitors. The sanctuary is a large part of the success of the Takahe Recovery Programme.

Experience breathtaking landscapes and for those who wish to add on a unique experience, take part in a guided Glowworm cave tour for a truly magical experience or an optional jet boat experience.

Tonight's stay Distinction Hotel Luxmore, Te Anau
Day 6

Your Te Anau hotel sits on the lake front, a short stroll from town. Today is yours: enjoy a relaxed day at leisure in this beautiful Fiordland gateway, or add an optional full-day excursion to cruise either Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound.

Travelling the Milford Road via the Eglinton Valley and Homer Tunnel is one of the finest alpine drives in the world — broad grassy flats, dense rainforest and towering mountains. A cruise takes you up close to the fiord's wonders, past landmarks like Mitre Peak and wildlife such as dolphins and seals, before returning to Te Anau in time for dinner.

Tonight's stay Distinction Hotel Luxmore, Te Anau
Day 7

Departing Te Anau for Invercargill, where we explore Bill Richardson Transport World — home to over 300 lovingly restored classic vehicles — before boarding the recently re-established "The Mainlander", which weaves its way through the rolling hills and lush rural landscapes of the deep south to Dunedin.

Tonight's stay Distinction Hotel Dunedin — the city's premier luxury hotel, in the heart of Dunedin
Day 8

In the morning, we explore the remote Taieri Gorge by Dunedin Rail over river gorges, weaving our way through a myriad of historic tunnels and guide you to the historic Wingatui Viaduct, a marvel of 1880s construction that remains the largest wrought iron structure in New Zealand.

An afternoon at leisure is planned or there are the optional excursions visit to Larnach Castle for a high tea & garden tour or explore the 'hidden' underground Fort Taiaroa, located underneath the Royal Albatross breeding colony at Taiaroa Head.

Tonight's stay Distinction Hotel Dunedin
Day 9

Departing Dunedin by coach, we hug the coast to Moeraki Beach to see the famous spherical boulders (tides permitting), with a lunch stop at the Harbour Street Café in Oamaru. We then detour inland via the Waitaki Valley & Omarama and on towards the spectacular Aoraki Mt Cook — home of the tallest mountain in New Zealand, which helped Sir Edmund Hillary develop his climbing skills in preparation for the conquest of Mt Everest. Recognised as part of the Te Wahipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Area, the National Park is a breath-taking environment of glaciers, terminal lakes, turbulent rivers and Australasia's tallest peak, the mighty Aoraki Mt Cook soaring above at 3,724 metres.

Tonight's stay The Hermitage Hotel — iconic accommodation with majestic mountain views of Aoraki Mt Cook
Day 10

Enjoy a leisurely morning and then a visit to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, which is a tribute to New Zealand's global icon as well as discovering New Zealand's colourful transport, climbing and hotel history. Followed by an afternoon drive to the Mueller Lake walk and lookout, surrounded by the silent splendour of the Southern Alps. Morning optional activities include a glacier explorer cruise or a scenic ski plane flight with expert pilots navigating their way over the glacial lake, passing soaring mountain tops over NZ's longest glacier — the 600 metre thick, Tasman Glacier. Guest speaker is a Hillary family representative in the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre Theatre before dinner. The optional Planetarium Show takes place in the theatre after the Hillary presentation.

Tonight's stay The Hermitage Hotel
Day 11

A morning departure from Aoraki Mt Cook by coach, we journey back to the coast via Tekapo, Geraldine and Rakaia, arriving in Christchurch for an overnight stay before the final rail leg north.

Tonight's stay Distinction Hotel Christchurch — centrally located
Day 12

"Where the mountains meet the sea"

Departing Christchurch on the Coastal Pacific Scenic Train, our destination is Kaikōura, home of resident whales, where the guardians of the seas — the mountains of the Southern Alps — rise majestically from the deep trenches of the Pacific Ocean. Several different species of whale can be seen off the coast of Kaikōura at different times of the year, and most of the time, the huge resident Sperm Whales can be sighted. The ocean trench just off the coast means sperm whales are often seen close to shore. Enjoy the option to go on a whale watching cruise or a zip line experience whilst in Kaikōura.

Tonight's stay Sudima Hotel Kaikōura — with views over the Kaikōura Esplanade
Day 13

This morning, we board the Coastal Pacific train again, departing Kaikōura's dramatic mountain backdrops onwards to the Marlborough winelands region. The coastal route heads inland, crossing the historic railroad bridge at Seddon and bursting out to the Awatere Valley, then through the Dashwood Pass en route to Blenheim by train. Continuing back to Kaikōura by coach after enjoying a leisurely wine tasting at Allan Scott Winery or a visit to Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre via Ohau Point seal colony.

Tonight's stay Sudima Hotel Kaikōura
Day 14

Wake up in Kaikōura and travel via Greta Valley to Weka Pass Railway in Waikari — journey through the unique limestone beauty of the Weka Pass in heritage carriages hauled by a vintage diesel-electric locomotive. Continue by coach through the rural Canterbury plains to Christchurch where the tour ends at lunchtime.

Optional post-tour Distinction Hotel Christchurch — available for an additional night if desired

Common Questions

Things worth knowing before you book

Your tour includes the complete “Super 6” rail adventures, high-quality coach travel (two coaches escort the train throughout the journey), experienced Tour Guides providing live commentary and local insights, and 13 nights of minimum 4-star accommodation.

Every prepaid attraction in the itinerary is included — among them the TranzAlpine, the TSS Earnslaw cruise and Walter Peak Farm Experience, the Kingston Flyer, the Takahē Sanctuary, Bill Richardson Transport World, the Mainlander, the Taieri Gorge journey, the Moeraki Boulders, the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre with a guest speaker from the Hillary family, the Coastal Pacific over two days, the Weka Pass Railway, and your choice of Allan Scott Winery or the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.

Meals: 12 cooked breakfasts, 9 dinners and 9 lunches, including the Gourmet BBQ lunch at Walter Peak Homestead (other lunches on your own).

All six of the “Super 6” rail adventures: the TranzAlpine across the Southern Alps, the Kingston Flyer steam train, The Mainlander (the southern sector from Invercargill to Dunedin), the Taieri Gorge journey with Dunedin Railways, the Coastal Pacific (across two days), and the Weka Pass Railway.

You can see exactly where each journey falls in the day-by-day itinerary above.

New Zealand's stunning, rugged terrain means that some of the most spectacular hidden gems are only accessible by road. Because of this, high-quality coach travel is a key part of our journey on some travel days. We include frequent comfort stops during coach travel and can stop in unique places that often rail cannot.

We have incorporated as much rail as possible within your itinerary. Please note that as New Zealand does not have sleeper trains, all overnight stays are in comfortable hotel accommodation.

Arrival & departure flights: your guided experience begins once you arrive — flights to and from the tour start and end points are not included.

Optional extra excursions: these are available to book prior to your tour departure. If you wish to add an excursion once on tour, speak with your Tour Guide — we will always do our best to assist where availability allows.

Personal expenses: visas, travel insurance, taxi fares, and personal spending money for non-included meals or items.

Pre- and post-tour accommodation is optional and can be booked through our Customer Care team or your travel agent, subject to availability.

Optional extras available to book pre-tour include the Franz Josef helicopter flight, a Doubtful Sound cruise (in place of the Milford Sound cruise), the Te Anau glow worm tour or jet boat experience, the Albatross Colony & Fort Taiaroa tour, Larnach Castle with high tea, the Tasman Glacier Explorer cruise or glacier flights, the “Galactic Journey” planetarium show, and — in Kaikōura — a zipline, whale watch cruise or Glenstrae Farm 4WD tour.

A Personal Details Form will be sent to you prior to departure, and this is where optional excursions can be requested. Some have limited spaces. If weather or safety conditions prevent a prepaid optional excursion from operating, it is refunded in full.

Absolutely. Many guests travel with us solo and our tours are designed to be welcoming and social without being overwhelming. Throughout the journey there are plenty of opportunities to meet and connect with other guests — including fellow solo travellers — during rail journeys, sightseeing, included meals and free time. Our Tour Guides will help ensure solo travellers feel comfortable and included as part of the group.

A single supplement of NZ$1,495 applies for guests requesting their own private room. Availability of solo rooms may be limited on some departures.

For your enjoyment and safety during the tour, you will need to be able to climb and descend two flights of stairs, walk unassisted comfortably for 500 metres over uneven surfaces, manage your own bags at times, and be able to look after yourself unassisted for an extended period if required.

Some hotels on the tour do not have walk-in showers (there are showers over baths). Please advise us in advance if you need a walk-in shower — they are limited, so not all requests can be fulfilled. If bringing a walker or a fully collapsible zimmer frame, you would need to travel with an able-bodied companion to assist you during the tour as needed.

A 20% deposit secures your booking; 40% is due six months prior to the tour departure; and the balance is due the month before your tour departs.

You can pay by bank transfer into a NZ$, AU$ or US$ currency account — request an invoice from info@pounamutourismgroup.com. Payments by Wise or PayPal are also accepted.

If cancellation is made more than 6 months prior to the tour departure, a full refund applies with no cancellation fee. 60 days or more prior to departure, a fee of 20% of the tour package price applies; between 30 and 59 days prior, 50%; and less than 30 days prior to departure, 100% of the tour package price applies.

In the event that Pounamu Tourism Group cancels a tour, a 100% refund applies. Full details are in the booking Terms & Conditions.

We strongly recommend that all passengers take out comprehensive travel insurance and review their health insurance coverage prior to travel.
